6 days Kenya tour Lake Naivasha – home to hippos and birds

At an altitude of 1,884 meters is the freshwater lake Lake Naivasha, where you will also find a colorful wildlife with the hippos as the lake’s most famous animals. The lake is located in the Rift Valley, a nearly 6,000-kilometer-long valley that cracks down the coast of Africa from Ethiopia to Mozambique. The shallow lake is bordered by green banks with papyrus and acacia trees growing wild, and horticulture and flower farms operated nearby.

The lake is home to many wildlife and we recommend most people traveling to Kenya to drive the 100 kilometers from Nairobi to get out sailing on Lake Naivasha. Especially in the evening and at night you can see the many large hippos that come to cool off in the lake, but also during the day there is plenty to see – especially for ornithologists. In addition, pelicans, eagles, and colorful kingfishers are among the many species you may be lucky enough to see on your boat trip on Lake Naivasha.

In this park, as something special, you can also walk in nature, for example in Hell’s Gate National Park, where the large animals such as hyenas, zebras, buffaloes, gazelles and antelopes also live. Moreover, the nature is raw and beautiful, so it is no wonder that many go here when traveling to Kenya.

Hell’s Gate Adventure: hiking, biking, climbing and more

Hell’s Gate National Park is located 80 kilometers north of Nairobi and was designated as a national park in 1984. The park is sometimes called ‘Kenya’s Grand Canyon’. The 15 kilometer gorge that dominates the park is believed to have formed more than 5,000 years ago when nearby Lake Naivasha overflowed its banks. The extinct volcanoes Olkaria and Hobleys are also located in Hell’s Gate as evidence of the volcanic activity in the area. The underground is still active, and in the park you will find both black volcanic glass and steaming geysers. In the 1980s, a power plant was built to harness the energy, and it now accounts for 15% of Kenya’s energy supply. The park also provided the background for the film adaptation of Tomb Raider in 2002.

You have barely entered the park before you are surrounded by a dramatic landscape of semi-desert, rugged cliffs, open plains and deep gorges. The park is home to, among other things, giraffes, zebras, gazelles, impalas, warthogs and other savannah animals. But since there are no predators, elephants and rhinos in the park, there is the possibility of numerous activities in Hell’s Gate that cannot be done elsewhere. Including hiking, cycling, climbing, bird watching and hiking through the gorges.

About Masai Mara Game Reserve 2023

The Masai Mara is the most famous national park for safaris in Kenya and a must visit on any trip to Kenya. With its 1,500 square kilometers, the National Park of southwestern Kenya is adjacent to the Serengeti in Tanzania, where millions of animals roam the open plains all year round. If there was an award for the world’s best wildlife, the Masai Mara would be nominated if not win it.

On a safari in the Masai Mara you see the big cats like lions, leopards and cheetahs, rhinos, elephants, giraffes and hundreds of bird species. But what Masai Mara is best known for is actually the wildebeest. Not because they are the most spectacular, but because they embark on a dangerous journey every year. This is “the great migration” that you can experience if you travel to Kenya between July and October.

Here, during your safari in Kenya, you can see hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and other animals migrating from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the savannah of the Masai Mara. Along the way, they must cross the Mara River, where the crocodiles lurk, so that the huge numbers of cloven-hoofed animals plunge into the water and fight a nerve-wracking battle to get over to the other side alive. Therefore, it is an incredible natural phenomenon and an experience we guarantee you will not forget.
