Every year, Zanzibar (aka Unguja) welcomes up to 400,000 tourists.
Visitors to this stunning island in Tanzania can expect white sands, beautiful blue ocean views, fascinating culture and the opportunity for adventure.
Are you planning on making the trek to the island of Zanzibar? It’s regularly been said that Zanzibar beaches are the highlight of the island. Here’s where to go and where to stay!
1. Swim in the Ocean at Matemwe Beach
This village sits on the northeastern coast. This area is now attracting more tourists than ever before and there is certainly a good reason for this.
However, make sure you visit this beach when the tide is in. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself walking for miles to go swimming!
Although many tourists visit this beach, you’ll find there is plenty of space for everyone as its very expansive.
There are many hotels around this area to suit any budget. Enjoy a dip in the swimming pool and a walk on the beach all before breakfast.
2. Sip Coffee at Paje Beach
Are you a coffee lover on a budget? This is the beach stop for you. Here, you’ll find cool hostels, solo travelers, the best coffee in town. The food in these parts is delicious as well.
Many backpackers believe this is the best place to stay on the whole island and don’t wander very far. There is a huge amount to keep you entertained here from kitesurfing to snorkeling.
If you simply want to lie in the sun, read a book, and have a dip in the ocean, the stunningly beautiful white sands and blue ocean water won’t disappoint.
However, you may want to consider hiring a scooter to get around this area. It’s not easy to get around on foot. If you hire a scooter, just make sure you’re prepared and that your travel insurance covers this.
Check out Mr. Kahawa for delicious food and drinks. It’s a popular place, so come early for breakfast.
3. Go Shopping at Stone Town Beach
Are you someone who loves to go on holiday and spend, spend, spend? If so, you’ll love Stone Town beach. There are shops and restaurants galore around this beach town.
You’ll find that the beach isn’t the most beautiful you can find on the island. But, the surrounding area is great. Furthermore, it’s considered a fantastic place to swim!
Not only will you be able to shop til you drop, but you’re also much more likely to get to know the locals here compared with more touristy destinations.
While you’re here, make sure to check out some of the most important historical sites and learn more about the island.
If you love luxury, the five-star hotel, Park Hyatt Zanzibar, is located here. It may be costly, but the views from the rooms are spectacular and you’ll be able to relax in style.
Remember, if you need cash – the only ATMs are in this area! So, if you’re moving on from here, make sure you get money out before you go anywhere.
4. Battle Tourists at Nungwi Beach
If you’re trying to escape from the tourist crowds, perhaps it’s not worth visiting Nungwi beach. But, you’ll be missing out on some beautiful sites. There’s a reason everyone gathers here.
Consider visiting for a shorter period of time to avoid the teenagers who come on holiday here. Just a day or two is enough to enjoy what Nungwi Beach has to offer.
However, it may be worth visiting the aquarium and checking out Gerry’s Bar & Restaurant which serves delicious cocktails right on the beach.
5. Avoid Dolphin Tours at Kizimkazi Beach
Kizimkazi is a small fishing village which was once a walled city. Now, it’s open for you to visit but remains quiet.
If you’re someone who loves diving and snorkeling, this is the beach for you. Although it’s not the most lovely on the island, it offers fun activities.
However, make sure you choose a snorkeling company which is responsible. Nowadays, we have a huge problem with animal tourism.
Animals are poorly treated and even if we think we’ve chosen an “ethical” trip, we can’t be sure. For example, at Kizimkazi Beach, you’ll find dolphin tours are very popular.
Unfortunately, many of these are considered to be unethical. This is largely due to mass tourism which is causing the dolphins huge stress.
Therefore, it’s a good idea to do your research or avoid these tours completely and instead enjoy the quiet beaches.
You’ll love swimming in the sea! You’ll also find some delicious food if you look closely. And, better yet, you won’t see many tourists!
In fact, Kizimkazi will be undergoing development over the coming years so it may become a very different place.
6. Explore the Popular Bwejuu and Dongwe
Bwejuu and Dongwe are located north of Paje. These beaches are some of the most popular that you will come across on the island.
This is due to a huge number of hotels and, of course, wonderful views. Better yet, the beaches here can be enjoyed throughout the day.
Swim, snorkel, and enjoy a day out with your family or friends. Then, head back to your hotel for an evening of relaxing and drinking.
Check out hotels such as Echo Beach Hotel which provides delicious food and will make you feel at home as soon as you set foot through the door.
Zanzibar Beaches Are Some of the Best in the World
If you can’t decide which of the Zanzibar beaches are the right fit for you, it’s worth exploring them all!
Of course, this requires time and dedication, but it will certainly be worth it. Simply hop on a scooter and away you go.
